MEDIA CENTER SERVICES

The media program of the Gwinnett County Public School System supports all areas of instruction; providing media resources, facilities, and services to the staff and students.  Through the unified approach to media services, resources are available in a variety of formats to meeting various learning styles and interest. Flexible scheduling of the media center allows individuals or groups to use the center when needed.  This concept of media services contributes to life-long learners and to individual self-fulfillment.

The media centers are the center of instructional support and informational service for each school and are organized for maximum accessibility and optimum service to students and staff.  The media specialists are committed to creating an inviting, stimulating environment and to planning with the instructional staff to provide effective educational experiences for the students.  Formal and informal instruction in the use of media resources and equipment should focus on the development of skills and attitudes necessary to promote life-long learning.  The school media specialist will plan and work with instructors to identify, select, and provide the best resources and activities to meet learner needs.

SCHOOL MEDIA COMMITTEE

The school media committee shall include the following members: principal, assistant principal, media specialists, students, teacher representative from each grade level, content or specialty area and community representatives.

MEDIA CENTER EXPECTATIONS

1.)    The Media Center will be open before school for the use of Media Center materials and/or quiet reading or studying.

2.)    No food or drinks are allowed in the Media Center.

3.)    Disciplinary action will be taken for inappropriate behavior and abuse of media materials.  Students and their parents must sign the AHS Acceptable Use Policy describing expectations of student behavior regarding student use of equipment and technology at Arhcher High School.

SKILLS INSTRUCTION

Skills instruction is a natural part of Media Center services whether organized into classes or taught as needed to individuals or small groups. Careful coordination of media skills with class assignments is essential so that the students learn skills as the need arises.  Cooperative planning with the teacher is necessary.

SCHEDULING CLASSES

See Mr. Everett to schedule class time in the media center.  Planning guides are available in the media center or on the shared folder under media. The Planning Guide is essential to making our collaborative lesson a success.

1.)    The use of media center computers must be tied to your curriculum, specifically meeting the AKS on which you are working. Students should be accompanied by a teacher.

2.)    Students should not be brought to the media center just to surf the net. The best way to guide students is by using the Media Resource page. “Net time” or “free time” is not acceptable.

3.)    Students should not download files to school computers unless they are directly related to curriculum goals. Games, music files and other programs can damage systems. These programs are not appropriate for the media center computers.

4.)    Students should not access e-mail while in the media center unless it is connected to the lesson on which you are working.

5.)    No food, drink, candy, or gum is allowed.

6.)    Before leaving the media center computers, please have the students log out and push their chairs in.

7.)    If you are planning on printing, please File>Print Preview your document before printing. Do not use paper that has already been printed on (i.e. paper from the recycle boxes). This can jam our printers or cause other visit.
